Everyday feels like a Sunday
Como sabem, sou aluna de Biologia Aplicada. Muitos já me perguntaram para que isto serve, chegaram mesmo a dizer-me que devia desistir deste curso porque estou a estudar para o desemprego... E eu tive sempre a mesma reação: rir-me e ficar calada.
O que pretendo seguir no fim curso (e, claro, do Mestrado) é Investigação. Lembro-me de uma altura ter dito isto a alguém e essa pessoa me ter dito "Ah! Tipo C.S.I.?" Não. Não quero Investigação Forense, mas sim aquela Investigação que se faz em Laboratório, sabem? Aquela em que há Cientistas a descobrir curas para doenças, onde há Cientistas a tentar descobrir formas inovadoras de ajudar a agricultura com químicos produzidos em Laboratório...
Desde sempre que tanto o meu curso como a carreira de Investigação são subjugadas e a mente do cidadão comum tende a pensar que pessoas como as que eu quero ser um dia, são apenas uma data de indivíduos que não faz nada da vida, ousam ir para um Laboratório vestir uma bata branca como um Médico, misturar alguns compostos químicos e já está! Eu própria cheguei a pensar isso, quando ainda estava no 12º e me perguntava se era mesmo isto que eu queria...
Mas estar em Laboratório não é assim tão simples!
E subitamente, por causa de um vírus chamado SARS-COV-2, que provoca a doença COVID-19, o mundo decidiu abrir os olhos e pedir aos Cientistas para se despacharem a arranjar uma vacina?! Finalmente os Cientistas têm uma utilidade e finalmente as pessoas percebem porque é que os Investigadores são importantes, tão importantes quanto Professores, Médicos, Engenheiros, Advogados, Políticos, Enfermeiros, Cozinheiros, Empreiteiros...
Todas as carreiras são importantes. Não há nenhuma melhor que a outra porque isto é um ciclo. Um Cientista é ensinado por Professores para ir em busca de soluções e curas para os Médicos e Enfermeiros aplicarem e são estes que curam o Advogado que vai defender o Empresário que vai ser julgado pelo vosso vizinho Juiz, são esses Médicos e Enfermeiros que vão curar o Cozinheiro do melhor restaurante do País que vai servir a refeição ao vosso primo Político e são esses médicos que vão curar o Engenheiro Civil e o Empreiteiro que vão construir a vossa futura casa. Tudo porque um Professor ensinou o Cientista. E o Cientista retribui também ao descobrir novas coisas que serão ensinadas nas escolas mais tarde...
Investigadores como os que eu quero ser um dia, deixaram de ser simples idiotas disfarçados de Médicos a misturar uma data de reagentes químicos e passaram a ser a solução para esta Pandemia... E isso é simplesmente a coisa mais hipócrita que o mundo pode estar a fazer.
E acreditem que me irrita ver a comunicação social a falar disto como se nós sempre tivéssemos tido a importância que merecemos de facto.
Não me admira que as vacinas só comecem a ser testadas daqui a uns meses, não me admira que talvez, pelo que tenho ouvido nas notícias, apenas para o ano tenhamos uma vacina. Mas admira-me imenso o facto de agora, do nada, as pessoas reconheçam que Biólogos, Químicos, Bioquímicos, Cientistas e Investigadores em geral, têm sim importância nesta sociedade.
E quando a Pandemia abrandar? Quando já houver uma vacina? Cairemos novamente no fundo...(?) Quanto tempo durará este reconhecimento (que é sim merecido)?
Podem não acreditar que isto, de os Cientistas não serem reconhecidos seja mesmo verdade... Mas então, porque é que 92% dos Investigadores Doutorados ficaram de fora no último concurso de estímulo ao emprego científico em 2018?
Quando isto acabar, a sociedade em geral vai voltar a ter a mesma mentalidade antiga, ponho as minhas mãos no fogo em como isso vai acontecer. Mas eu não vou permitir que me voltem a dizer que os Cientistas não servem de nada, que não fazem nada da vida. Não vou permitir que me deixem no desemprego quando acabar os estudos. O mundo não acredita, e não é preciso que acreditem. Apenas observem. Daqui a uns anos, falaremos! Porque agora na Pandemia, só os Investigadores têm o poder de encontrar uma cura... Mas e depois de a encontrarem?
Até lá, vamos continuar nesta quarentena, onde todos os dias parecem Domingo...

Introductory note: Sorry for the honesty and everything I will say in this post, but I feel that if I don't say it, I will never be able to live in peace with myself. This has been in my head for too long. I just want remember you that this is my opinion and that I realize that many of you do not agree, but try to understand why I write this. Thank you!
As you know, I am an Applied Biology student. Many have already asked me what this is for, they even said that I should give up this course because I am studying for unemployment... And I always had the same reaction: laugh and keep silent.
What I intend to follow at the end of the course (and, of course, the Master's) is Investigation. I remember a time when I said this to someone and that person said to me "Ah! Like C.S.I.?" No. I don't want Forensic Investigation, but I want that Investigation done in the Laboratory, you know? The one where there are Scientists discovering cures for diseases, where there are Scientists trying to discover innovative ways to help agriculture with chemicals produced in the Laboratory...
Since always, both my course and the Investigation career are subjugated and the mind of ordinary people tends to think that people like the ones I want to be one day, are just a couple of individuals who do nothing in life, dare to go to a Lab wear a white coat like a Doctor, mix some chemical compounds and that's it! I myself thought that, when I was still in 12th and wondered if this was what I really wanted...
But being in the Lab is not that simple!
And suddenly, because of a virus called SARS-COV-2, which causes COVID-19, the world decided to open its eyes and ask Scientists to hurry up to get a vaccine?! Finally, Scientists are useful and finally people understand why Researchers are so important, as important as Teachers, Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Politicians, Nurses, Cookers, Contractors...
All careers are important. There is none better than the other because this is a cycle. A Scientist is taught by Teachers to look for solutions and cures for Doctors and Nurses to apply and they are the ones that heals the Lawyer who will defend the Entrepreneur who will be judged by your neighbor Judge, it is these Doctors and Nurses who will cure the Cooker of the best restaurant in the country that will serve the meal to your Political cousin and it is these doctors who will cure the Civil Engineer and the Contractor who will build your future home. All because of a Professor that taught the Scientist. And the Scientist also reciprocates by discovering new things that will be taught in schools later...
Researchers like the ones I want to be one day, stopped being simple idiots disguised as Doctors mixing a date of chemical reagents and became the solution to this Pandemic situation... And that is simply the most hypocritical thing the world is doing right now.
And believe me, I hate to see the media talking about this as if we have always had the importance that we really deserve.
I am not surprised that vaccines will only begin to be tested in a few months, I am not surprised that perhaps, from what I have heard in the news, we will only have a vaccine for the next year. But I am really amazed that now, out of nowhere, people recognize that Biologists, Chemists, Biochemists, Scientists and Researchers in general, do matter in this society.
And when the Pandemic slows down? When there is already a vaccine? Will we fall to the bottom again... (?) How long will this recognition (which is well deserved) last?
You may not believe that this of the fact that Scientists are not recognized is really true... But then, why is it that 92% of PhD researchers were left out in the last competition to stimulate scientific employment in 2018 (Portugal)?
When this is over, society in general will return to the same old mentality, I put my hands on the fire on how it will happen. But I will not allow myself to be told again that Scientists are not useful, that they do nothing in life. I will not allow people to leave me unemployed when I finish my studies. The world does not believe, and it is not necessary for them to believe. Just watch. In a few years, we'll talk! Because now in Pandemic, only Researchers have the power to find a cure... But what about after they find it?
Until then, we will continue in this quarantine, where every day feels like a Sunday...
